What we do...
To achieve our mission, we immerse the students for a week in July, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, in all things Bach and Baroque. This includes experiential activities such as choral singing, playing Orff instruments and the harpsichord, Baroque dancing, writing and performing plays based on Bach’s life and times, and speaking common German phrases.
Students also see movies and slide shows about Bach, take a field trip to the Carmel Bach Festival, hear guest musicians and also perform for each other. Bach himself (a local musician in costume) attends for a day or two to oversee the festivities! The week ends with a “performance” by the students, dressed in full costume, for their families and friends.
After the 2009 Bach Academy, the response by children
and parents was overwhelmingly enthusiastic. Students came away with a profound appreciation and knowledge about
Bach the man and his music. And they learned how to dance, play the harpsichord, and speak a little German! Three
weeks after the Academy, many parents have told us that their children were still singing the songs they learned
and loved listening to Bach’s music.
We look forward to Bach Academy 2010 to again
share with children the magnificence of Johann Sebastian Bach.
