On a remarkable solstice day in June, 2006, twenty-six intrepid travelers - fifteen 5th grade students from Vine hill School in Scotts Valley, CA, their teacher, Jane Hancock, and ten chaperon moms, began an adventure of a lifetime to explore eight cities in Eastern Germany, where the great composer, Johann Sebastian Bach lived and worked.
Jane Hancock, who has a specialty in western music history and a profound reverence for the music of Bach, had made this pilgrimage a few years before and made many musical contacts in the Bach cities. Because of her students overwhelming excitement and appreciation for the music of Bach and their knowledge of Bach’s music and life, it “dawned” on her that this would be an experience that her students would enjoy on a very deep level. So with fund raising, the help of Tracy Miller at ACIS, (a student educational travel agency), and after months of careful preparation, the trip was on!!
When many of us were asked how the trip went when we returned, it truly was not possible to communicate the magic which was present during this journey.
This site, and the Bach Academy, are inspired by this trip. In this website, we try to express and share this profound experience through text, photos, personal reflections, and more
