Who We Are
Susan Bruckner (Co-Director) is a pianist and teacher with degrees from the Eastman School of Music, the New School for Music Study and the San Francisco Conservatory. She has done extensive research on learning styles and brain research pertinent to musicians and is author of the book, The Whole Musician. She is a clinician at the annual Healthy Musician Institute at Ithaca College and frequent lecturer on these topics in the U.S. and abroad. She is co-founder and director of the Bach Academy in conjunction with the Carmel Bach Festival. Susan is head of the piano department at Cabrillo College and has also taught at the University of Utah, Ithaca College, and Diablo Valley College.
Jane Hancock (Co-Director) has a degrees in photography from the University of California, Santa Cruz. and in education from San Jose State. She has been an educator in the Scotts Valley School District, CA, for 18 years. Ms. Hancock was awarded a grant to develop a classical music appreciation program for the Scotts Valley Schools. She has pursued her passion for music through many courses and as a performer in recorder ensembles and classical choirs. Jane has sung the music of Bach in local choirs in Santa Cruz for over 25 years. She is the co founder of the Summer Bach Academy for Children, sponsored by the Carmel Bach Festival. Inspired by her love of Bach’s music, she lead a student tour of 5th graders to the Bach cities in Eastern Germany in the summer of 2006.
Coleen Clark has been teaching music at Scotts Valley Elementary Schools for 15 years, focusing on Orff instruments and choral music. She is Orff trained, is an accomplished pianist, and has a studio of private piano students. After graduating from UCSC in psychology, previous to teaching music, she spent 20 years owning and running retail photo labs with her husband, Craig. Coleen has also been involved with the Cabrillo Youth Chorus and traveled to Spain singing with the Cabrillo College Symphonic Chorus.
Julia Chiapella has a degree in Theater Arts and an MA in education. Prior to receiving her MA she was a journalist
covering the arts for the greater Bay Area. During that time she was a columnist with the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
Her column, Artbeat, highlighted the visual arts, focusing on local exhibitions and spotlighting community artists.
She has a keen appreciation for the arts in all their forms, having spent many years exploring different mediums.
A teacher in the Scotts Valley School District for four years, she incorporated art as a major theme throughout
her curriculum.
